Fireworks on a Saturday Night, Diwali Style

Heard of Diwali? It’s more popularly known as the “Festival of Lights” and is an important five-day festival in India. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps known as “diyas” and are filled with oil. This year the Indian Association of San Antonio partnered with the City of San Antonio once more to bring the 2nd Annual Festival of Lights to Hemisfair Park. Baptist Health System was excited to help sponsor the event and join in the festivities. The event kicked off at 6pm and after finding a parking place the smell of
delicious curry and samosas greeted us from away. Candles twinkled in the pools of water near the fountains and hundreds of attendees streamed past in beautiful saris and Indian clothes. Later on a firework display lit the night sky on fire.

Dr. Vish Viswanathan was instrumental in making this event happen.

This event is the result of the Sister City Program between San Antonio and Chennai, India. This was materialized due to the vision of our former Mayor, Mr. Phil Hardberger.

The event was attended by by the thousands and is meant to grow twice as big next year, thanks to the continued support of organizations like BHS.
