Magnet status is awarded by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Fast Facts

Only about 340 hospitals in the country have achieved Magnet status.
Nurses at Northeast will be the first in our system to work toward meeting the criteria to become a Magnet hospital. Their goal is to achieve that level of excellence by 2013.
Our other four Baptist hospitals also plan to launch their own Magnet journeys.

Wendi Deleon, Chief Nursing Officer at Northeast Baptist Hospital, spoke about the advantages that Magnet status brings: nursing delivers excellent patient outcomes, nurses have a high level of job satisfaction, and nursing staff turnover rate is low.

Tommye Austin, Ph.D., Chief Nursing Executive for Baptist Health System, described the five model components that will be addressed and improved in order for Northeast to achieve Magnet status. They are transformational leadership; structural empowerment; exemplary professional practice; new knowledge, innovation and improvements; and empirical quality results.

This marked the third year that Baptist was the presenting sponsor and we were excited to learn that we exceeded our fundraising goal of $135,000 by raising almost $136,000. Fireworks on a Saturday Night, Diwali Style

Heard of Diwali? It’s more popularly known as the “Festival of Lights” and is an important five-day festival in India. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps known as “diyas” and are filled with oil. This year the Indian Association of San Antonio partnered with the City of San Antonio once more to bring the 2nd Annual Festival of Lights to Hemisfair Park. Baptist Health System was excited to help sponsor the event and join in the festivities. The event kicked off at 6pm and after finding a parking place the smell of
delicious curry and samosas greeted us from away. Candles twinkled in the pools of water near the fountains and hundreds of attendees streamed past in beautiful saris and Indian clothes. Later on a firework display lit the night sky on fire.

Dr. Vish Viswanathan was instrumental in making this event happen.

Baptist Health System's Director of Communications, Karen May says, "The local chapter of the American Heart Association has set a goal of raising half a million dollars for research into preventing and treating heart attack and stroke. Employees and affiliated physicians of the Baptist Health System have pledged to raise $135,000 toward that goal. Why? Because we see the damage that heart disease and vascular disease does to San Antonio families."

Baptist Health System's nurses Nancy Schmucker, Clinical Outreach Director and Beth Davenport, Community Health Screening Manager will be standing by at the Mobile Health Unit to offer free health screenings to walk participants. I'm not sure if I will be bringing my dogs this year but I'm starting to raise funds and will be there with my walking shoes on the 6th.

Health Collaborative Kicks Off 2010 Community Assessment

Learn about the Bexar County Community Health Collaborative's 2010 community assessement. The study will look at San Antonio's overall health status, examine the shifting patterns on key health issues over time, and identify the community’s strengths and resources as well as gaps in services. The 2010 assessment is the fourth in a series of assessments issued by The Health Collaborative every four years since 1998.

It is being conducted in three phases throughout the year with a final report due in early 2011.

National Doctors' Day was created to show appreciation to your doctors. Doctors perform vital diagnosis, treatment and care for yourself and your family. Doctors' Day observances date back to March 30, 1933. It was started by Eudora Brown Almond of Winder, Ga. The day marks the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery.

The first National Doctor's Day was celebrated in 1991. On March 30, 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors' Day. In 1990, the congress and the senate approved legislation establishing National Doctors Day. The resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors' Day was signed by President George Bush.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention colorectal cancer screening saves lives but many people who are at risk for the disease are not being screened according to national guidelines.

What is Colon Cancer?
Colon cancer is the growth of cancer in the large intestine. Cancer occurs when cells in the body divide out of control or order. If cells keep dividing, a mass of tissue, called a growth or tumor, forms. The term cancer refers to malignant tumors. They can invade nearby tissue and spread to other parts of the body

Reducing Your Risk
It is estimated that as many as 60% of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented if all men and women aged 50 years or older were screened routinely. In most cases, colorectal cancer develops from precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum. Screening tests can find precancerous polyps, so that they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening tests also can find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.

Some studies show that increased physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight may decrease the risk for colorectal cancer. Evidence is less clear about other ways to prevent colorectal cancer.

Currently, there is no consensus on the role of diet in preventing colorectal cancer, but medical experts recommend a diet low in animal fats and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products to reduce the risk of other chronic diseases, such as coronary artery disease and diabetes.

In addition, researchers are examining the role of certain medications and supplements, including aspirin, calcium, vitamin D, and selenium, in preventing colorectal cancer. While these supplements may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, the most effective way to reduce your risk is by having regular colorectal cancer screening tests beginning at age 50.

As part of national heart month Baptist Health System is excited to provide FREE health screenings for women at the Vestido Rojo conference.

Vestido Rojo means red dress in Spanish and this is the symbol for the American Heart Association's movement for women called "Go Red for Women." Did you know that heart disease is the number one cause of death in Hispanic and Latino women? Vestido Rojo is an initiative, de todo corazón, to address the needs of Hispanic and Latino women in San Antonio.
At Vestido Rojo, women will receive complimentary health screenings and participate in workshops delivered in Spanish and English designed to help them and their families live heart healthy.

Baptist Employees Running and Walking to Fitness

Last weekend hundreds of Baptist Health System employees walked (and ran) 3 miles to raise funds and awareness for heart disease at the American Heart Association's annual Heart Walk. It was a big success and a very enjoyable morning. Baptist also took home the much coveted Spirit Award for the 2nd year running. See Photo Gallery.

This weekend (Sunday, November 15) many of us will run the San Antonio Rock N' Roll 1/2 marathon and full marathon. Graham Reeve, President & CEO, Michael Zucker, Chief Development Officer, Elisa Ellington, Executive Assistant, and Bramer Owens, Director of Ambulatory are just a handful of Baptist employees taking part and we've been excitedly sharing training tips and gearing up.

This truly is an energizing event and helps to raise awareness on how we can all incorporate fitness into our life and make it part of our lifestyle. I participated in the 1/2 marathon last year and will do the full this year. As a first time marathoner I'm so looking forward to joining the crowd (31,000 runners) and our Baptist runners. It's an amazing feeling to run with so many people. If you're planning on going as a spectator please lend your support to the runners and give me a wave if you see me. I'll be in the Running for Mindy t-shirt.

Do you know about The Bexar County Health Collaborative? The Collaborative works to improve the health status of our community through collaborative means. They began informally in 1997 when the city’s major healthcare organizations agreed to put aside their competitive business practices to conduct a comprehensive health needs assessment. The group evolved into an incorporated entity with a long-range strategic plan to improve the health status of the community by working together.

This October (1-2) you can join the Collaborative at the 5th Annual San Antonio Health Literacy Conference at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel in San Antonio. Health care professionals, educators, health plan administrators, community service providers and others involved in health literacy are invited to attend.

I had the privilege of introducing Morton S. Kahlenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S., as the keynote speaker to the San Antonio Rotary during one of their standing lunch meetings at the Bright Shawl.
Dr Kalenberg is the Medical Director of Surgical Oncology Associates of South Texas and the Baptist Cancer Center and presented on the risk factors for melanoma, how to recognize and diagnose it and how it is treated in the 21st century. Melanoma is a skin cancer of the melanocytes, the cells that make skin color and give moles their dark color. Dr. Kalenberg stated that the early diagnosis and accurate management of melanoma is crucial for enhancing patient outcomes. Melanoma continues to be a growing health concern with 62,500 new cases of melanoma diagnosed in 2008. There will be an estimated 8,250 deaths in 2009 as a result of this disease. In the U.S., the estimated lifetime risk is 1 in 55 for males, 1 in 81 for females. The incidence of melanoma is increasing more rapidly than any other cancer in men and is second only to lung cancer in women.

Watch virtually any TV newscast tonight to see coverage of the announcement that an AirLIFE helicopter will now be based at North Central Baptist Hospital. A news conference this morning at North Central Baptist Hospital in Stone Oak attracted coverage by KENS-TV (Ch. 5), KSAT-TV (Ch. 12) KABB-TV (Fox News), WOAI-TV (Ch. 4) KWEX-TV (Ch. 41), as well as WOAI Radio, and area community media such as StoneOakInfo.com and Neighborhood News.
NPR Radio also included the announcement in their newscasts today.

One of the San Antonio AirLIFE helicopters is now based at North Central Baptist Hospital, which speeds the dispatch of flights to the growing communities north of San Antonio.
This new location shaves life-saving minutes from air medical response time.

San Antonio AirLIFE was organized Sept. 1, 1990 as a not-for-profit community service to San Antonio and South Texas. More than 40,000 patients have been transported by its state and national-award winning crews. North Central Baptist Hospital opened its doors to patients Sept. 17, 1991, and has grown to meet the growing needs of the community around it. Students from Health Careers High School also participated in the news conference, with two students getting to fly from the previous base at Baptist Medical Center to North Central Baptist Hospital, and about 30 additional students participating in a demonstration of how the AirLIFE crew transports patients in the "intensive care units in the sky

We had a ball at the SAPD health expo last week where we spent two days providing information on health and diet and offered samples of a delicious, nutritious smoothie. We also wished Anna Flores from the Baptist Health System School of Health Professions a fond farewell at a retirement reception in honor of her 41 years of service to Baptist Health System. Go Anna!

This week in addition to setting up more health and wellness events in our community I'm looking forward to hearing Bill Greehey, Chairman of the Board of NuStar Energy L.P. and NuStar GP Holdings, LLC, speak at the North Chamber's Salute to Excellence luncheon at the Westin Riverwalk Hotel. Mr. Greehey is being honored for his leadership in the energy industry and his contributions to improve health and human welfare conditions, to brighten the lives of sick and disadvantaged children, to educate, and to help transform the lives of the homeless.

About Aggie Park

In 1946, Aggie Park was created as the home of the San Antonio A&M Club. This facility is one of a kind. No other alumni club anywhere has a facility as unique as Aggie Park. When the San Antonio A&M Club was granted is original charter by the Texas Secretary of State, 3.3 acres of land on the outskirts of San Antonio, next to Olmos Creek, were purchased from Henry Wier's dairy by 10 men who personally bankrolled that far sighted vision. It was a place where Aggies could meet with friends and family to share the traditions of Texas A&M.

As time passed the number of Aggies grew, improvements to the land were started. A BBQ pit was built and a patio added. A building began to grow slowly through the efforts of dedicated Aggie volunteers. Concrete block and bricks were donated to build the walls, and windows that were salvaged from Beeville AFB were installed. Also, drill stem pipes from the oil fields in Victoria, TX. were donated to build the roof trusses.

During Muster, April 21, 1954, the San Antonio A&M Club dedicated Aggie Park to the memory of all Aggies who had given their life in protecting our country. By then the park had become a landmark in the San Antonio Community. Continued improvements were made through the contributions of material and labor from dedicated Aggies. In 1979 the San Antonio A&M Club moved its daily operation to Aggie Park along with the weekly Monday luncheon.

Approximately twenty seniors listened intently and asked questions as Dr. Huey described the signs and symptoms of stroke and discussed how to Act FAST. Do you know what FAST is?

The class was organized by OASIS of San Antonio. OASIS is a non-profit which works to provide quality education to seniors for free or minimal cost. OASIS is free to join. Learn more.

It's been a busy week including meeting Julian Castro, the new Mayor of San Antonio, at a reception held by the Greater Chamber at the fabulous Museo Alameda. Hospital Presidents Jack Cleary, Dan Brown, and Keith Swinney attended with me and we were delighted to find out from the Mayor himself that his first baby had been born at North Central Baptist Hospital in Stone Oak.

Be Careful in the Heat: Are you at Risk?

As the temperatures soar we need to be extra careful in the heat as heatstroke and heat exhausation are potentially deadly conditions. In training for my first marathon this year I have to be extra careful while running in the heat. I drink lots of water, run very early in the morning, and pour water over my head to cool down while running long distances and races.

My co-worker Sam Spencer (see photos)and I ran a 1/2 marathon at McCallister Park. It was very hot and we drank water constantly!

Health Care: A Future Career Path for Young Students

Keith Swinney, President and CEO, Baptist Medical Center spent time with high school juniors and seniors discussing a career in health care. He was invited to talk as part of the Good Samaritan Community Services (GSCS). The GSCS is providing Summer Employment and Work Readiness services to 815 youth, ages 14 to 18, with funding from the 2009 Economic Stimulus and Recovery Act, and through the GSCS contract with Workforce Solutions Alamo. This month pre-employment conferences held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church featured 34 labor market information presentations and 33 work site tours into the community, and increased awareness of career pathways for hundreds of young people. They are now on their way to their first summer job.

Keith offered advice on some of the many career opportunities that health care has to offer and told how he got into the field at age 22. He mentioned how healthcare is one of the top three industries in San Antonio. According to BioMedSa, San Antonio’s well established community of healthcare and medical service providers -- including hospitals, physicians, other specialty providers and nursing homes – form a strong foundation for the city’s $16.3 billion Healthcare and Bioscience Industry.

Jill Oettinger, Chief Executive Officer, Good Samaritan Community Services says, "We are so grateful to the Baptist Health System for helping us to meet the needs of youth who are living in poverty, by introducing them to the real world of work. They are asking people to donate gently used women's suits, separates or jewelry to to help low-income women "Dress for Success."

What can I Donate?
Current clothing and accessory needs:

Clothing items should meet the needs of the average client between the ages of 26-33 and that the clothes are current in fashion and no more than 5 years old.
Women's Suits (plus sizes biggest need)
Professional separates: pants, blouses, skirts--neutral colors only, No animal print or busy patterns
Professional shoes (closed toed, low heel, neutral colors)
Handbags and briefcases
New panty hose
Trouser socks
New and unused make-up
Jewelry - especially pearl earrings and necklaces

The "Suit Drive" will run through June 26th.

I had the great honor of introducing Richard Perez, President and CEO of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce as the keynote speaker at the Rotary Club of San Antonio. Free Hatha Yoga Classes for Cancer Patients and Survivors

How cool is this? The Baptist Cancer Center is offering FREE gentle Hatha style yoga classes for cancer patients and cancer survivors on Friday mornings at 8 am. When my mother developed breast cancer ten years ago I wish this type of service was offered to her. I would have so loved to gone with her to a class and I think she would have really enjoyed it.

If you have a loved one or friend or family member who you believe would benefit from this type of class be sure to let them about it.

CLASS INFORMATION:

The classes are FREE for all cancer patients and survivors. Guests are also invited but are asked to pay $10.00 each session.
The 45 minute class begins promptly at 8 am. Participants should wear comfortable loose fitting clothing. Mats and pillows are available for students use.

Health Education and a "Go Green Smoothie" at the Pearson Company

As part of our community outreach and commitment to health education we spent time in the community with employees from the Pearson company on Bulverde Road. In conjunction with their health awareness week we provided information on diet, diabetes, and heart disease. Sanjay Kumar, MD, and William Mallott, M.D., from the BHS Physicians Network spoke on the benefits of good heart health, heart disease prevention, and diabetes awareness and prevention.

Registered Dietitian Jennifer Meachum RD, LD, CNSD, spent one-on-one time educating employees on good diet and nutrition. Jennifer also demonstrated how to make a very colorful "Go Green Smoothie." Packed with phytonutrients (pronounced FIGHT-O), which, just as the word sounds, has been show to fight certain cancers and reduce the risk of heart disease and aging the smoothie is made with baby spinach, frozen bananas, frozen mangoes, frozen peaches and water. I asked Jennifer to make mine without the banana and it was surprisingly delicious and nutritious. See Photos.

Rotary Honors Mr. Bill Greehey at Haven for Hope Luncheon

On Friday I attended the Rotary Club of San Antonio all clubs luncheon honoring Mr. Bill Greehey, chairman of NuStar Energy and chairman of Haven for Hope, for his work and leadership on the new campus for the homeless. Mr. "Red" McCombs was the keynote speaker and discussed how Mr. Greehey had worked tirelessley on founding and serving as Chairman for Haven for Hope. The facility is already considered a national model in the fight against homelessness.

The 37-acre Haven for Hope Campus is located adjacent to the Central Business District, west of downtown San Antonio and will include approximately 440,000 square feet of space under roof, with 998 beds and a courtyard area with the capacity to sleep over 500 additional individuals.The project has also served as a revitalization effort to the surrounding neighborhood through the addition of high quality new buildings and the renovation of several abandoned buildings. The Campus is partially open and is expected to be fully completed in Fall 2009.

American Heart Association hosts Heart Ball at the Grand Hyatt

I'm told that the Majestic Theatre is looking for some volunteers for Wicked for the month of June. The Majestic is looking to involve community groups in serving as volunteers to their patrons during the month of June for Wicked (girl scout, boy scout groups, church groups, school groups or volunteer organizations). They are especially interested in groups of 10-20 and your organization may be acknowledged as the volunteer group of the night.

The steps of City Hall were covered in a sea of green as people showed up in sneakers and displayed their commitment to walking and improving their health. You too, can incorporate walking into your daily routine. Don't have 30 minutes to walk? Don't worry. You can get the same benefits by doing three 10-minute walks. If you want to start a personal walking plan for your health, then join me at a news conference Wednesday, April 8 on the steps of City Hall at 11:30 a.m. This lunchtime event is sponsored by the American Heart Association, with support from Baptist Health System.

In fact Michael Zucker, BHS Chief Development Officer and the 2009 Heart Walk Chairman, will be a speaker along with the City Manager and the Mayor Pro Tem.

The news conference concludes with a brief walk downtown. This is a nationwide celebration
encouraging employers to allow their employees to wear tennis shoes to work and take 30 minutes to walk for their health.

San Antonio Food Bank Honors George H. Gaston, III PhD

As part of the "Cover the Uninsured Week" series of events developed by the San Antonio food bank George H. Gaston, III PhD, Vice President of Ministry, Baptist Health System has been awarded the "Praise Be" award for his service in the community. See photos from the awards ceremony.

George Gaston III, Ph.D., has served as Vice President of Ministry for Baptist Health System (BHS) since 2003. During his tenure, Dr. Gaston has been instrumental in expanding and maintaining community-focused ministries aimed at improving the well being of individuals in communities throughout the greater San Antonio area. Specifically, Dr. Gaston was successful in facilitating a 289% in Baptist employee giving to United Way, initiated efforts to build 5 Habitat houses in partnership with ten San Antonio congregations, and established the Employee Crisis Fund (a program funded by Baptist employees that provides assistance to members of the Baptist Health System family in times of need). Dr. Gaston is actively involved in the United Way of San Antonio & Bexar County, Habitat for Humanity, and is the founding Board Member of Faith Family Clinic (a clinic focused on providing a primary medical home for the working uninsured of San Antonio). Dr. Gaston received his Bachelor of Arts in History and Religion from Baylor University and, thereafter, earned his Master of Divinity and Ph.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Cover the Uninsured Week (March 22-28) is a national effort to highlight the fact that too many people are living without health insurance and as a means to bring about community awareness the San Antonio Food Bank will be hosting a series of events through March 28th.
