Northeast Baptist Kicks Off Magnet Journey to Nursing Excellence

Happy Fiesta to all! This Fiesta season Baptist kicked Northeast Baptist Hospital's journey to excellence in nursing by going for Magnet status by 2013.
Learn More from the News Conference at Northeast Baptist HospitalNearly 100 nurses, other hospital staff, doctors and hospital leaders gathered this morning to celebrate the official start of the Magnet Journey that Northeast Baptist Hospital is taking toward nursing excellence. Magnet status is awarded by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Fast Facts
  • Only about 340 hospitals in the country have achieved Magnet status.
  • Nurses at Northeast will be the first in our system to work toward meeting the criteria to become a Magnet hospital. Their goal is to achieve that level of excellence by 2013.
  • Our other four Baptist hospitals also plan to launch their own Magnet journeys.

Wendi Deleon, Chief Nursing Officer at Northeast Baptist Hospital, spoke about the advantages that Magnet status brings: nursing delivers excellent patient outcomes, nurses have a high level of job satisfaction, and nursing staff turnover rate is low.

Tommye Austin, Ph.D., Chief Nursing Executive for Baptist Health System, described the five model components that will be addressed and improved in order for Northeast to achieve Magnet status. They are transformational leadership; structural empowerment; exemplary professional practice; new knowledge, innovation and improvements; and empirical quality results.
